A scheme says which paint goes where. A recipe is a written guide someone else wrote. You can paint from either.
A colour scheme
A scheme maps areas of a miniature to paints: armour is this, cloak is that, eyes are the bright one. It is a plan for a look, and it is the thing you reuse — paint a second squad the same way and you apply the same scheme.
Schemes are yours. You build them, you edit them, and you can attach one to a whole squad or to a single model inside it.
A recipe
A recipe is a reference guide: ordered steps, a difficulty (beginner, intermediate or advanced), a rough time, a rating and the list of paints it calls for. It reads like a tutorial, because that is what it is.
Recipes are reference material shared across the app rather than a plan attached to your models.
Which one you want
Reach for a scheme when you know the look you want and you want it recorded so the next squad matches. Reach for a recipe when you want to be told what to do, step by step, by someone who has painted it before.
Painting from either
When you start a painting session you choose what drives it: one of your schemes, a recipe, or nothing at all if you would rather improvise. The session then tracks your progress step by step, whichever you picked.
One thing to know if you have shared your profile: on a public painter page your schemes are labelled "paint recipes". That is only wording for visitors who do not know this app's vocabulary — they are still your schemes.
