Dreadtober, Squaduary and the like — how a challenge counts your models, and what joining puts on the board.
What a challenge is
A challenge is a time-boxed painting event with a start and an end — the hobby's own traditions, like Dreadtober or Squaduary, given a page to run on. Each one has its own address and you reach it by following a link: there is no list of challenges inside the app, because the page is built to be posted in a forum thread or a Discord channel.
A challenge is either coming, running or finished, and the page says which. You can join one that is coming or running; once it has finished the board is final.
Joining and leaving
Joining takes one press and needs an account. Nothing about your pile changes — a challenge reads what you paint, it does not own any of it, and you can be in more than one at a time.
Leaving is on the same page. It takes you off the board at once and discards your score with it, so rejoining later starts you at zero rather than restoring what you had. That is deliberate: it stops a painter sitting out the middle of an event and coming back with the total intact.
What counts towards your score
A model counts when you complete the painting session that covers it. Ticking steps and running the timer feed your streak and your hours, but models land on the board at the moment a session is finished.
Two limits, both deliberate. Only work finished after you joined counts, so joining late does not backfill what you painted earlier in the month. And only work finished inside the window counts, so a session completed after the end date scores nothing.
The board
The board lists everyone who has finished at least one model, highest first, with the earlier joiner ahead on a tie. Painters who have joined but not yet finished anything are counted in the painter total and are not ranked — the community leaderboard draws the same line.
It is a public board on a public page: your display name, your avatar and your model count can be read by anyone with the link, signed in or not. The leaderboard switch in settings does not govern it, and leaving the challenge is what takes you off.
