Kingdom of Bretonnia — Mounted Knights of the Realm
The army in one model: bright plate, a heraldic shield and a caparisoned warhorse. The plate is a metal lesson and the shield is a freehand one, so paint the horse first and the heraldry last.
Knightly plate
- Leadbelcher Citadel
- Nuln Oil Citadel
- Ironbreaker Citadel
- Runefang Steel Citadel
- Basecoat the harness Basecoat
- Shade the plate All-over shade — Nuln Oil everywhere, then a second coat into the joints only once the first is dry.
- Bring the plate back up Layer
- Sharpen the edges Edge highlight — Runefang Steel on the plate edges only. Bretonnian armour is polished, so the highlights carry it.
Caparison and surcoat
- Macragge Blue Citadel
- Drakenhof Nightshade Citadel
- Altdorf Guard Blue Citadel
- Teclis Blue Citadel
- Averland Sunset Citadel
- Yriel Yellow Citadel
- Basecoat the cloth Basecoat
- Shade the drapery All-over shade
- Highlight the folds Layer — Altdorf Guard Blue over the raised cloth, then Teclis Blue on the fold ridges alone.
- Fleur-de-lys Freehand — Averland Sunset first — it covers over blue where a yellow layer will not — then Yriel Yellow on top of the same shape.
Shield heraldry
- Corax White Citadel
- White Scar Citadel
- Mephiston Red Citadel
- Evil Sunz Scarlet Citadel
- Balthasar Gold Citadel
- Agrax Earthshade Citadel
- Basecoat the field Basecoat — Two thin coats of Corax White over the whole shield face, then White Scar to bring it clean.
- Paint the charge Freehand — Block the shape in Mephiston Red first and tidy the outline with Evil Sunz Scarlet once it is dry.
- Rim the shield Detail
Warhorse
- Rhinox Hide Citadel
- Agrax Earthshade Citadel
- Gorthor Brown Citadel
- Ushabti Bone Citadel
- Dryad Bark Citadel
- Basecoat the coat Basecoat
- Shade the muscle All-over shade
- Drybrush the flanks Drybrush — Gorthor Brown along the grain of the hair, following the muscle rather than crossing it.
- Blaze, mane and hooves Detail — Ushabti Bone for a face blaze and the hooves; the mane stays darker than the coat.
Lance and tack
- White Scar Citadel
- Mephiston Red Citadel
- Rhinox Hide Citadel
- Agrax Earthshade Citadel
- Mournfang Brown Citadel
- Spiral the lance Detail — Paint the whole lance White Scar, then wrap a red band down it — the spiral is easier as stripes on white than as white on red.
- Straps and saddle Layer
Skin
- Bugman's Glow Citadel
- Reikland Fleshshade Citadel
- Cadian Fleshtone Citadel
- Kislev Flesh Citadel
- Basecoat the flesh Basecoat
- Shade the whole face All-over shade — Reikland Fleshshade does the work here — do not thin it, the recesses want to be dark.
- Bring the features back Layer — Cadian Fleshtone on the nose, brow and cheekbones, then Kislev Flesh on those points only.
Base
- Stirland Battlemire Citadel
- Karak Stone Citadel
- Rhinox Hide Citadel
- Texture the base Texture — Battlemire over the whole base — Bretonnia fights across ploughed field and marsh.
- Drybrush the dried earth Drybrush
- Rim the base Detail
