Dwarfen Mountain Holds — Ironbreakers

Intermediate · 6 areas

Almost the whole model is one material, so this is a metal exercise rather than a colour one: gromril plate carried by shading and edge highlights, with gold masks as the only relief. Slower than Warriors, and the technique transfers to every other armoured unit in the hold.

Gromril plate

  1. Basecoat the armour Basecoat — Two thin coats. Leadbelcher over a black undercoat goes patchy in one and the wash will show it.
  2. Shade the whole model All-over shade
  3. Layer the plate faces Layer — Ironbreaker on the flat of each plate, staying clear of the joins so the shade still reads.
  4. Edge the plates Edge highlight — Runefang Steel on every plate edge, then Stormhost Silver on the helmet crest and the shield rim alone. With no colour to carry the model, the edges are the model.

Gold mask and clan runes

  1. Basecoat the gold Basecoat
  2. Shade the mask Recess shade
  3. Highlight the features Edge highlight

Cloak and tabard

  1. Basecoat the cloth Basecoat
  2. Shade the folds All-over shade
  3. Highlight the cloth Layer

Beard

  1. Basecoat the visible beard Basecoat — Only what shows below the mask — usually the last two braids.
  2. Shade the braids Recess shade
  3. Drybrush the tips Drybrush

Axe haft and leather

  1. Basecoat the wood and straps Basecoat
  2. Shade both All-over shade
  3. Highlight the haft Layer

Base

  1. Texture the base Texture
  2. Drybrush the mountain stone Drybrush
  3. Rim the base Detail
